Academic Therapy Publications

Celebrating 50 Years (1965-2015)

"Academic Therapy is a philosophy. It provides a controlled functional climate to meet the emotional needs of the student. It recognizes the possibility of neurophysiological factors which might exist and which might basically be related to the academic failure of the student. It is teaching in a structured environment in an unstructured way."
-Academic Therapy Quarterly 1965

Academic Therapy Publications (ATP) was founded in 1965 by John I. Arena, an educator and therapist who was at the forefront of the learning disabilities movement in the 1960s and 1970s. Gifted with working one-on-one with students, his background included time as an elementary school teacher, teacher of orthopedically handicapped, reading therapist. and director of neurologically handicapped and visual-perceptual programs at an innovative learning center. ATP began with the journal Academic Therapy Quarterly, the first periodical devoted to disseminating information on learning differences to parents and teachers as well as professionals. While he was running ATP, John Arena also started the Arena School and Learning Center in the 1970s, and was heavily involved through the 1980s with various organizations such as the Learning Disabilities Association (LDA).

Academic Therapy Publications was one of the first publishers to meet the needs of teachers, parents, and students in the field of special education and learning disabilities. Now, 50 years after its founding, ATP is still a family-owned business that is proud to continue producing relevant materials that can be used by special ed teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, school psychologists, educational therapists, ESL teachers, parents, and specialists in all fields working with persons with reading, learning, and communication disabilities.
