Description The PCEI is a concussion assessment and monitoring tool that tracks recovery from concussion in children. The PCEI includes three scales utilizing items from the BRIEF-2, the gold-standard test for executive function. Use the PCEI to:
- Determine if a students postinjury ratings of everyday executive function are clinically different from his or her retrospective preinjury ratings.
- Monitor concussion recovery
- Determine if symptoms are attributable to the concussion or if they were part of the childs preinjury functioning
The PCEI results are helpful when developing treatment recommendations, providing accommodations in school, and managing activities and expectations at home.
The PCEI was normed on a sample of 1,229 students ages 11 to 18 years and 1,668 parents. The sample includes both symptomatic and asymptomatic groups.
Administration and Scoring Paper and pencil administration can be completed quickly. Raw scores for Working Memory, Emotional Control, and Initiate (Parent Form)/Task Completion (Self-Report Form) are reported as Retrospective-Adjusted Post-Injury Difference (RAPID) scores.
Reliability and Validity Internal consistency coefficients ranged from 0.75 to 0.89 for the asymptomatic sample and from 0.91 to 0.93 for the symptomatic sample.
