Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration - 6 (VMI-6) (Beery VMI)

Authors: Keith E. Beery, PhD / Norman A. Buktenica / Natasha A. Beery, MS

  • Perceptual-Motor (Integrated & Separate)
  • Individual / Group Administration
  • Ages 2 through 100
  • Norm-Referenced
  • Culture-Independent
  • Qualification Level B

The VMI-6 is the best researched and most economical visual-motor battery available

The VMI identifies significant difficulties in integrating or coordinating visual perceptual and motor (finger and hand movement) abilities. Geometric figures (not numbers or letters) are to be copied, making the test virtually culture-independent. It can be administered by psychologists, learning disability specialists, school counselors, teachers, and other professionals.

This new edition has updated norms for ages 2 through 18; adult norms to age 100 were updated in 2006. Adult norms are important because visuoconstructional deficits are an early indicator of dementia such as Alzheimer's disease. The VMI-6 also provides updates on medical, neuropsychological, international, and other advances in the use of the VMI in recent years.

The VMI's supplemental tests of Visual Perception and Motor Coordination can contribute much needed information to produce a confident assessment when combined with results from other assessments.

Existing (VMI-5) forms may still be used, since the test content has not changed, but examiners should obtain a VMI-6 manual for the new norms. The Full Format Form may be used for all examinees; the Short Format Form is for ages 2-7 only.

Administration and Scoring

The VMI-6 was standardized on a national sample of 1,737 individuals age 2 to 18 years (2010) and 1,021 adults ages 19-100 (2006), and has proven reliability and validity.

The Short Format and Full Format tests take about 10-15 minutes each to administer; the supplemental Visual Perception and Motor Coordination tests about 5 minutes each. Results are reported as standard scores, percentiles, and age equivalents.
