Wiig Assessment of Basic Concepts (WABC)

Description The WABC is a unique, norm-referenced assessment that evaluates a childs understanding and use of basic concepts. The WABC can be used to:
- Create focused IEPs and intervention plans
- Thoroughly assess 7 categories of basic concepts, including Color/Shape, Size/Weight/Volume, Distance/Time/Speed, Quantity/Completeness, Location/Direction, Condition/Quality, and Sensation/Emotion/Evaluation
- Identify children in preschool and kindergarten who need extra help with basic concepts
- Distinguish deficits in using basiced concepts from deficits in understanding them
- Distinguish an inability to understand basic concepts from deficits in following directions.
The WABC was normed on a nationally representative sample of 1,200 children.
Administration and Scoring The WABC is individually administered using an interactive storybook format and can be completed in 10-15 minutes. An Overall standard score is reported, and optional Qualitative Response Analyzer is available to assist with goal setting and intervention planning.
Reliability and Validity
- Test-retest correlations ranged from 0.92 to 0.93 for Overall scores.
- Inter-rater reliability correlation was 0.99.
- Results of validity studies are reported in the Manual.
