Reynolds Intellectual Screening Test-2 (RIST-2)

Authors: Cecil R. Reynolds, PhD / Randy W. Kamphaus, PhD

  • Intelligence
  • Ages 3 through 94
  • Testing Time: 15 minutes
  • Individual Administration
  • Qualification Level B

Description
The RIST-2 quickly and reliably identifies individuals who may need a more comprehensive intelligence assessment. The RIST-2 also can be useful in clinical and school practice when a global estimate of intelligence is all that is needed, for example when screening for intellectual impairment and giftedness. The RIST-2 is derived from the updated Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales-2 and includes two subtests:

  • Guess What a verbal measure of crystallized intelligence
  • Odd-Item Out a nonverbal measure of fluid intelligence
  • The RIST-2 was normed on a nationally representative sample of 2,154 children, adolescents, and adults.

    Administration and Scoring
The RIST-2 can be administered in only 15 minutes. Subtest scores are reported as T scores and percentile ranks. The overall Index score is reported as a standard score and percentile rank.

    Reliability and Validity

    • Correlations between the RIST-2 and other measures of intelligence and achievement, including the WISC-IV FSIQ, WAIS-IV FSIQ, WPPSI-IV FSIQ, AAB Composite, and FAR Total Index, and ChAMP Total Memory Index strongly suggest the RIST-2 is an appropriate screener for intelligence.
    • Validity was assessed in studies with individuals with stroke, dementia, hearing impairment, traumatic brain injury, intellectual disability, ADHD, and learning disability.
