Number Sense Screener (NSS)
Authors: Nancy C. Jordan, EdD / Joseph J. Glutting, PhD / with Nancy Dyson, PhD
Description
The Number Sense Screener is a quick, reliable, and affordable screener useful to identify students in kindergarten and first grade at risk of later math difficulties, and to design intervention. The test evaluates six areas of numerical competence aligned with Common Core standards for kindergarten: Counting, Number Recognition, Number Comparison, Nonverbal Calculation, Story Problems, and Number Combinations. It is predictive of math achievement through at least third grade.
Administration and Scoring
The NSS can be completed in 15-20 minutes. Subtest raw scores are used to identify areas for remediation. A total raw score is converted to a standard score and percentile rank, based on norms for fall and spring of kindergarten, and fall of first grade.
