Academic Achievement Battery (AAB)

Author: Melissa A. Messer, MHS

  • Academic Achievement
  • Individual Administration
  • Ages 4 through 85
  • Norm-Referenced
  • Qualification Level B

Description
The AAB is a complete achievement assessment, offering both a comprehensive battery and a screening version for use with individuals over an extended age range. It was developed using academic standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Teachers of English, Common Core, and Reading First.

A Fast Guide, included in the test kit, streamlines administration and scoring of both the screening and comprehensive versions. Although examiners should review the materials before testing, no intensive preparation is necessary.

Screener
Used as a screener for initial evaluation of academic skills, the AAB assesses performance in four basic skill areas (one is optional):

  • Letter/Word Reading
  • Spelling
  • Mathematical calculation
  • Written composition (optional; requires an extra
    15 minutes to administer)

    Comprehensive
If used as a comprehensive battery, the AAB evaluates seven major skill areas, although not all subtests are administered to all age groups:

    • Basic Reading (Reading Foundational Skills; Letter and Word Reading; and Reading Fluency)
    • Reading Comprehension (Words and Sentences; and Passages
    • Listening Comprehension (Words and Sentences; and Passages)
    • Expressive Communication (Oral Fluency; Oral Expression; and Oral Production)
    • Written Expression (Pre-Writing Skills; Spelling; and Written Composition), for which a scoring rubric is provided
    • Mathematical Calculation
    • Mathematical Reasoning

The norming process included statistical analyses evidencing strong reliability, with reliability coefficients for the subtests ranging from .77 to .97, and from .88 to .98 for the composite scores across the age- and grade-based normative samples. Subtest and composite scores were also found to be highly correlated with similar constructs on the WJ III, KTEA-II, WRAT4, and WIAT-III. Analysis also supports the AAB's ability to differentiate performance in individuals with various learning disabilities, intellectual developmental disorder, ADHD, and speech/language impairment from performance of neurotypical individuals.

    Administration and Scoring
The screener takes 15-30 minutes to administer and 5-10 minutes to score. A composite score, the AAB Screening Composite, is calculated to capture a snapshot of performance in reading, spelling, writing, and math.
