The TOMA-3 assesses major skill areas of math, as well as the student's attitude toward math. This new edition features updated norms and expanded reliability and validity statistics. Norms are based on a nationally stratified sample of 1,456 students.
Two of the subtests have also been renamed. Four subtests make up the core battery (Mathematical Symbols and Concepts, Computation, Mathematics in Everyday Life, and Word Problems); Attitude Toward Math is a fifth, optional subtest. The results of the core subtests can be combined to form an overall Mathematical Ability Index.
Mathematical Symbols and Concepts - Students answer a series of multiple-choice questions that relate to mathematical signs, symbols, words, or phrases.
Computation - Students solve a series of problems that increase in difficulty.
Mathematics in Everyday Life - Students answer a series of multiple-choice questions that relate to the use of mathematics in everyday life.
Word Problems - Students solve a series of increasingly difficult word problems.
Attitude Toward Math (Supplemental) - Students express their attitudes about mathematics instruction and their self-perceptions regarding their own abilities and achievement.
Administration and Scoring
The test takes about 1 hours to administer. Results are reported in standard scores, percentiles, and grade or age equivalents. Core battery scores produce a composite score, the Mathematical Ability Index.
