Description
The new SPM-P can identify sensory processing difficulties in children as young as 2 years of age. It evaluates overall sensory functioning as well as specific vulnerabilities that can affect learning. Based on the same scale structure and theory, the SPM and SPM-P together allow monitoring of sensory development from preschool all the way through age 12.
The SPM-P evaluates eight functional areas: Social Participation, Vision, Hearing, Touch, Body Awareness, Balance and Motion, Planning and Ideas, and Total Sensory Systems. Other difficulties such as under- or over-responsiveness, sensory-seeking behavior, and perceptual problems are reported, as well as information on taste and smell.
The SPM and SPM-P support the core principles of RTI.
Administration and Scoring
A Home Form is completed by the parent, and a School Form is completed by the preschool teacher or day care provider. Each takes 15-20 minutes. Results are reported as a T-score for each scale, as well as a descriptive category (Typical, Some Problems, or Definite Dysfunction).
