Psychoeducational Profile-3 (PEP-3)

Authors: Eric Schopler, PhD / Margaret D. Lansing / Robert J. Reichler, MD / Lee M. Marcus

  • Communication Disabilities
  • Ages 6 months through 7 years
  • Testing Time: 45-90 minutes
  • Individual Administration
  • Qualification Level B

Description
This popular test assesses the skills and behaviors of young children with autism and communication disabilities. Because it charts uneven and idiosyncratic development, emerging skills, and autistic behaviors, the PEP-3 is particularly useful in planning IEPs. The PEP-3 directly assesses skills in 10 Performance areas:

1. Cognitive Verbal/Preverbal

6. Visual-Motor Imitation

2. Expressive Language

7. Affective Expression

3. Receptive Language

8. Social Reciprocity

4. Fine Motor

9. Characteristic Motor Behaviors

5. Gross Motor

10. Characteristic Verbal Behaviors

In addition, a Caregiver Report provides a parent or caregiver estimate of the child's developmental level compared with typical children. The report consists of three subtests: Problem Behaviors, Personal Self-Care, and Adaptive Behavior.

Administration and Scoring
The PEP-3 takes 45 to 90 minutes to complete. Raw scores for the Performance subtests and Caregiver Report are converted to percentile ranks and Developmental/Adaptive Levels. Composite scores for Communication, Motor, and Maladaptive Behaviors can also be calculated.

Reliability and Validity

  • Internal consistency values ranged from 0.92 to 0.98 for the Performance Test and from 0.84 to 0.90 for the Caregiver Report.
  • Test-retest correlations for the Caregiver Report were above 0.94.
  • Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three-factor design of the PEP-3 significantly fit the data.

WARNING - CHOKING HAZARD: Small parts. Not for children under 3 years. This test includes manipulatives with small parts that may present a choking hazard and should only be administered to children less than 3 years of age under close supervision of the test administrator.
