Description The TOSS-I:NU is an individually administered test of semantic skills in older elementary and adolescent children. The test analyzes students receptive and expressive semantic skills, including labeling, categorizing, identifying attributes and functions, and defining words. Test items emphasize vocabulary that is meaningful and relevant to late-elementary and middle school students, using 18 illustrations depicting natural, real-life scenes related to the themes of:
- School
- Learning
- Community
- Home
- Leisure activities
- The environment
The TOSS-I:NU was normed on a stratified, representative sample of 1,241 students.
Administration and Scoring Administration of the TOSS-I:NU takes about 30 minutes. Raw scores are converted to scaled scores for the Receptive and Expressive Language subtests, and to a standard score for the composite Semantic Skills Index. The subtests may also be informally analyzed by skill area.
Reliability and Validity
- Cronbachs Alpha values ranged from 0.87 to 0.89 for the subtests and was 0.93 for the Semantic Skills Index.
- A Semantic Skills Index cutoff score of 90 resulted in a sensitivity of 0.86, a specificity of 0.85, and a ROC/AUC of 0.91.
