Description
The TGMD-3 is an update of the popular measure of common gross motor skills. It can help identify children who are significantly behind peers in skill development and who may need special physical-education services. The new version includes additional items to eliminate possible ceiling effects. The TGMD-3 is made up of two subtests:
- Locomotor – measures the gross motor skills that require fluid, coordinated movement of the body as the child moves through space
- Ball Skills – measures the gross motor skills of efficient throwing, striking, and catching movements
The TGMD-3 was normed on a nationally representative sample of 862 children.
Administration and Scoring
Each subtest of the TGMD-3 can be quickly and easily administered in 15 to 20 minutes. TGMD-3 subtest raw scores are reported as scaled scores and the overall Gross Motor composite is reported as a standard score.
Reliability and Validity
- Cronbach’s Alpha values ranged from 0.88 to 0.89 for subtests and was 0.93 for the Gross Motor composite.
- Results of validity studies are reported in the manual.
- For the cognitive impairment sample, a Gross Motor composite cutoff score of 90 resulted in a sensitivity of 0.71, a specificity of 0.91, and a ROC/AUC of 0.87. For the autism spectrum disorder sample, a cutoff score of 85 resulted in a sensitivity of 0.76, a specificity of 0.91, and a ROC/AUC of 0.86.
